What actually stops the boat
Wind, ice and smoke are the real risks; rain is only a mood.
Wind. Maligne Lake is fourteen kilometres of open water running straight down a valley, and it funnels. A strong forecast is the most common reason a Maligne Lake cruise does not sail in midsummer, and it is also why the first departure of the day is the safest one to book.
Ice. The season is bracketed by it. Sailings begin when the lake clears, usually early June, and stop when it starts to close again in October. Those edges move by a week or two from year to year, so an early-June or early-October booking carries real risk.
Smoke. Some summers the Canadian Rockies get wildfire haze. The boats still run; the peaks behind Spirit Island just fade. Nothing can be done about it except keeping a spare morning.
Rain and cloud do neither. The vessels are enclosed and heated, the commentary carries on, and flat light is kinder to the canyon and the forest than sun is. A grey Maligne Lake cruise is a worse photograph and the same trip.
Building a trip that survives a bad day
