Maligne Canyon: where the lake goes underground

Fifteen minutes out of Jasper on the road to the boathouse, the Maligne River drops into a limestone slot more than fifty metres deep and in places barely wide enough to spit across. Maligne Canyon is free, it takes twenty minutes or two hours depending on how far you walk, and in winter the whole thing freezes solid.

The underground river

Why Maligne Canyon is stranger than it looks

A lake that drains underground, springs in the canyon walls, and a slot cut by dissolution as much as by flow.

Medicine Lake, halfway up the valley, has no surface outlet. Every autumn it drains away through sinkholes in its bed and becomes a gravel flat; every spring the meltwater refills it faster than it can drain. The water that leaves it travels underground through one of the largest karst systems in North America.

And it comes out here. Springs in the walls of Maligne Canyon feed the river below the upper bridges, which is why the flow increases as you walk down and why parts of the canyon keep running in winter when the top is frozen solid.

The rock explains the shape. Limestone dissolves as well as erodes, so instead of a broad V the river has cut a slot — deep, narrow, and undercut in places. From the first bridge you look straight down into it.

In winter it becomes something else entirely. The waterfalls freeze, the floor becomes walkable with the right gear and a guide, and you stand inside the slot looking up at ice you were photographing from above in summer.

Twenty minutes is enough for the drama
The first and second bridges look straight down into the deepest, narrowest section of Maligne Canyon.
The full walk is downhill, then uphill
Down to the sixth bridge is easy; coming back up is the work. About two hours round trip.
Go early, on the way to the boat
The car park fills by mid-morning in summer, and you are driving past anyway.
Watch for the springs
Below the fourth bridge the flow visibly increases, and that water has come underground from Medicine Lake.

How the two fit into one day

Lake first for the still water, canyon on the way back — one road, no backtracking.

Maligne Canyon sits on the road to the lake, about fifteen minutes out of Jasper. That placement is the whole argument: anyone driving to a Maligne Lake cruise passes the car park twice, and the loop down to the fourth bridge and back takes under an hour.

The order matters. Do the canyon on the way back down. A morning Maligne Lake cruise wants the stillest water and the emptiest boardwalk, so the lake comes first; the canyon is just as good at noon, and better in flat light than in sun.

Done that way, a single day gives you the cruise, Medicine Lake and the canyon without repeating a kilometre — which is why the Maligne Valley is the best day in Jasper and the Maligne Lake cruise is the part you book first.

If you are driving to the Maligne Lake cruise, Maligne Canyon is fifteen minutes into the journey and costs nothing. Skipping it to be early for a sailing is the wrong trade unless you have the first boat.
