Jasper is the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies and the least crowded of them. The Maligne Valley holds the headline trip, but a canyon, a sky tram, a dark-sky reserve and the Icefields Parkway all sit within an easy drive — and most of them pair naturally with a morning on the lake.

How to spend the days
Day one the Maligne Valley, day two the Parkway, day three the tram and the sky.
One day. The Maligne Valley, start to finish. Leave Jasper early, take the first sailing on the lake, and stop at Medicine Lake and Maligne Canyon on the way back down. That is the best single day in Jasper National Park and it ends before dinner.
Two days. Add the Icefields Parkway. It runs 232 km south to Lake Louise past the Columbia Icefield, and it is routinely called one of the great drives on earth. Guided trips from Jasper cover it as a long day out.
Three days. Add the Jasper SkyTram for the view over the whole valley, a walk around Pyramid or Patricia Lake, and an evening looking up — Jasper is one of the largest dark-sky preserves in the world and the difference on a clear night is not subtle.
Beyond the lake
All of them are within reach of a base in Jasper town.

Fitting the valley into a Jasper trip
One road out of town holds the canyon, Medicine Lake and the cruise — do it as one day.
Most people arrive in Jasper National Park with fewer days than they wanted, and the first thing that gets cut is the Maligne Valley, because it is an hour out of town. That is the wrong cut.
The valley road delivers three of the park’s best things in one line: Maligne Canyon at fifteen minutes, Medicine Lake at forty, and the Maligne Lake cruise at the end of it. You drive out once and come back once, and you have seen more of Jasper National Park than two days near the town would give you.
Book the Maligne Lake cruise for the first sailing and the day builds itself around it: leave at dawn with the wildlife on the road, sail while the water is still glass, then work back down the valley at your own pace.
