What you get along the way is better than people expect: the run south passes through narrows where Samson Peak and Mount Unwin close in on both sides, the commentary is genuinely good on the glaciology and the history, and the boats are enclosed and heated so the weather does not end the day.

The northern end of the lake is beautiful from shore and free. If the famous photograph does not matter to you, that may be enough.
Canoe and kayak rentals reach Spirit Island with a night at a backcountry campsite. Slower, cheaper and a far better trip — if you have the days and the skills.
The lake is an hour from town each way. On a half day, Maligne Canyon and the SkyTram give you more for the time.
The stop is short by design. If the plan was to walk around the island, this is not that trip — nobody is allowed onto the island itself.
