There are exactly two ways to reach Spirit Island, and one of them is a fourteen-kilometre paddle each way on cold, exposed water. What the canoe gives you. Time. You can sit at the viewpoint for an hour, wait for the light, camp at one of the backcountry sites and be there at dawn before any boat arrives. Nothing about the Maligne Lake cruise can offer that.
What it costs you. Fourteen kilometres each way, wind that builds from late morning, and water cold enough that a capsize in the middle of the lake is a serious situation rather than an inconvenience. It is a genuine wilderness paddle, not a rental-boat afternoon.
And the honest arithmetic. A full day of hard paddling against ninety minutes and $85. If photographing Spirit Island in perfect dawn light is the point of your trip, the canoe is the answer. For everything else, it is not close.

Maligne Lake is long, straight and exposed, and the wind builds from late morning. Most capsizes and most abandoned attempts happen on the way back.
The lakeside campgrounds require them and they book out in summer. Without one it is a twenty-eight-kilometre single day.
It is glacial melt. Air temperature in August is irrelevant if you go in.
Canoes and kayaks are available on the shore, and bringing your own needs a self-certification permit.
