How long is the Maligne Lake cruise? Ninety minutes, and half a day

The sailing is ninety minutes and the day is about five. That gap is where most of the planning mistakes happen, because the listing quotes the first number and your morning is shaped by the second. Here is exactly how long the Maligne Lake cruise takes, from leaving Jasper to getting back.

The wake of the cruise boat on Maligne Lake

Quick answer

The Maligne Lake cruise is ninety minutes: about forty minutes down, fifteen ashore at Spirit Island, and a faster run back. Add an hour each way for the drive from Jasper and time for the stops, and the whole thing is roughly half a day. The full-day tours on this page run six to eight and a half hours and contain the same ninety-minute sailing.

Minute by minute

What the ninety minutes actually contain

Twenty wide, twenty narrowing, fifteen ashore, thirty-five home.

The first twenty minutes are wide. The northern end of Maligne Lake is open water with the Opal Hills on one side, and the guide spends it on how the lake formed and how the colour works. It is the least dramatic stretch and the most useful.

Then the lake narrows. Samson Peak, Mount Charlton and Mount Unwin close in from both sides and the water darkens as the depth changes. This is the part of the Maligne Lake cruise that people do not expect to be as good as the destination.

Forty minutes in, the boat turns. Into a sheltered bay, and Spirit Island is fifty metres off the bow. Everyone stands up at once.

Fifteen minutes ashore. On a boardwalk, with the classic viewpoint at the end of it. Long enough to see it properly and take the photograph; not long enough to wander, which is deliberate.

And thirty-five minutes back. Most people sit inside for this. The light has usually changed and the lake looks different in the other direction.

Planning the day around it

Six ways the Maligne Lake cruise fits a schedule

The sailing is fixed; the day around it is not.

  • Half a day, self-driving, first sailing

Leave Jasper at seven, stop at Maligne Canyon, sail at nine, back in town by one. The best version.

  • Half a day, self-driving, afternoon sailing

Works, but the boardwalk is busier and the water is rougher.

  • Six hours, on a tour

Pick-up in Jasper, the valley, the canyon, the Maligne Lake cruise, back by mid-afternoon.

  • Eight and a half hours, on a tour

The same sailing with more of the park either side of it.

  • Two hours, if that is all you have

Then this is not the trip. The SkyTram at $58 is fifteen minutes from town.

  • A full day with the glacier as well

Not really possible. The Columbia Icefield is an hour and a half the other way, and the Maligne Lake cruise is half a day on its own.

The commonest scheduling mistake is booking a midday sailing and planning something else for the afternoon. The Maligne Lake cruise takes half a day door to door, and the road back is slow if there is a bear on it.

Common questions

How long it takes, answered plainly

How long is the Maligne Lake cruise?

Ninety minutes return: about forty minutes down the lake, fifteen ashore at Spirit Island, and about thirty-five back.

How long does the whole trip take?

About half a day if you drive yourself, because the boathouse is forty-eight kilometres up the valley from Jasper.

How long do you get at Spirit Island?

About fifteen minutes, on the boardwalk. Nobody lands on the island itself.

How early should I arrive?

Twenty to thirty minutes before your sailing, to check in at the boathouse. The queue for the first departure starts before it opens.

Can I do the cruise and the Columbia Icefield in one day?

Not comfortably. They are in opposite directions and the Maligne Lake cruise is half a day by itself.

Is the return leg the same route?

Yes, and it usually runs faster. The light will have changed, which is why the lake looks different on the way back.
